Obviously, the banana symbolizes the irrationality of the universe. Rather than having a banana peel under his foot, the man is wearing it on his head, subverting our presumptions about comedy and tragedy. His expression of abstract terror is reminiscent of Giambologna's Rape of the Sabine Women. His eyes, one should note, are one closed in ignorance and the other staring directly at the viewer, thus breaking the barrier between the art and the viewer of art. We, the faceless masses, are the ones who have so savaged this man. Truly, a masterpiece rarely seen in this era.
